When reflecting on the increasing rise of Islamic terrorism in the last two decades, consider this: The Nizari Ismailis were an Shia Islamic sect that formed in the late 11th century, by Hassan-i Sabbah. Hassan-i Sabbah, also known as the Old Man of the Mountain founded a secret magical Order known as the Assassins.
Sabbah was well-liked throughout Cairo, Syria and the Middle East. Using his fame and popularity, he attracted many loyal deciples that he would ply with hashish. His deciples were fully committed to his cause and willing to carry out his every request, often giving their own lives to achieve their objective.
While "Assassins" typically refers to the entire medieval Nizari sect, in fact only a class of acolytes known as the fida'i who actually engaged in assassination work.
The Assassins were absorbed into the Roshaniya, or Illumined ones of Afghanistan in 16th-century Afghan by Bāyazīd Ansārī. Pīr Roshān was a Pashtun warrior, poet, Sufi master and intellectual from the Ormur tribe.
He challenged the inequality and social injustice he imputed to the Moghul rulers of the day, instead advocating an egalitarian and even communistic social system, and taught doctrines that questioned some widely accepted teachings within Islam.
Initiates were inducted into the order through the same series of secret rituals and degrees of practiced by all secret societies. In fact, they are indeed, all one in the same.
